Our Program

Global climate change is one of the biggest threats facing our planet today. Human activity over the last century has been the dominant cause of climate change, which means we also have the power to take action.

We must act now – purchasing green power, installing solar or simply switching off your lights when they aren’t in use can go a long way.

The international community has agreed to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, slowing global warming to well below 2 degrees and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. This is a responsibility shared by government, industry, communities and individuals.

The Victorian Government has committed to:

  • Net zero emissions by 2050 (Climate Change Act 2017)
  • 25 per cent of renewable electricity generation by 2020 and 40 percent by 2025 (Renewable Energy (Jobs and investment) Act 2017)

Our Commitment

Surf Coast Shire Council recognises the value our community places on the natural environment and is committed to demonstrating environmental leadership.

In fact, we want to become a state leader in renewable energy take up and also assist our community in making the switch.

Council is leading the way, having already installed nearly 500 kW of solar generation capacity across more than 20 Council managed sites. Furthermore, the Council is currently exploring opportunities to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.

Powered by Positive

Powered by Positive is a program to empower Surf Coast Shire residents and small businesses to take action, use less energy and consider taking up renewable energy.

Some of the key barriers to taking action are:

  • Confusion: What actions should you take?
  • Trust: Who can help you?
  • Finance: How can you fund it?

Our program will help you overcome these barriers and make it easy for you to reduce your energy use – now that’s positive for the environment and your hip pocket!
