Global climate change is one of the biggest threats facing our planet today. Human activity over the last century has been the dominant cause of climate change, which means we also have the power to take action.
We must act now – simply switching off your lights can go a long way.
The international community has agreed to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, slowing global warming to well below 2 degrees and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. This is a responsibility shared by government, industry, communities and individuals.
The Victorian Government has committed to:
- Net zero emissions by 2050 (Climate Change Act 2017)
- 25 per cent of renewable electricity generation by 2020 and 40 percent by 2025 (Renewable Energy (Jobs and investment) Act 2017)
Surf Coast Shire Council recognises the value our community places on the natural environment and is committed to demonstrating environmental leadership.
In fact, we want to become a state leader in renewable energy take up.
Our goal is to work with the community to drive the use of renewables and achieve 25% renewable energy consumption in our shire by June 2020.
Council is leading the way, having already installed nearly 230 kW of solar generation capacity across 17 Council managed sites, and this is planned to reach more than 400kW by the end of 2020. Furthermore, the Council is currently participating in a major local government Power Purchase Agreement exploring opportunities to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.
Powered by Positive
Powered by Positive is a program to empower Surf Coast Shire residents and small businesses to take action, use less energy and consider taking up renewable energy.
Some of the key barriers to taking action are:
- Confusion: What actions should you take?
- Trust: Who can help you?
- Finance: How can you fund it?
Our program will help you overcome these barriers and make it easy for you to reduce your energy use – now that’s positive for the environment and your hip pocket!
